Christmas is too significant to be celebrated on just one day!  The storyline of the Bible from Genesis to Malachi builds to that moment in human history when God became a man.  Christmas celebrates God’s in-person rescue of his chosen people from sin, suffering, Satan, and death.

To appreciate the true meaning of this great gift - early church leaders set aside four weeks for their congregations to contemplate what the birth of Jesus meant to every soul. They called it Advent, the Latin word for the coming.

Our Advent theme this year is – Jesus!  The Eternal Son of God. In December, we will examine four key roles that God the Father ordained for his only Son.  Jesus is…

The Creator – who holds all things together.

“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible…” – Colossians 1:15

The Prophet – who guides us by the Word.

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” – John 1:14

The Priest – who became the perfect sacrifice for sin.

“Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” – Matthew 1:20-21

The King - who leads us to final victory.

“From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh, he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.” – Revelation 19:15-16

And of course, we will sing Christmas Carols that call us back every year to rejoice with awe and gratitude – that it was in a human child that God was pleased to dwell.
