“Tune My Heart to Sing Thy Grace”

Did you know that baby birds learn their songs by listening to and imitating their fathers? Researchers have discovered that when nestlings interact with older “tutors” in their communities they learn to “tune” their tiny tweets to match the sounds, and eventually the songs, of their feathered father-teachers.

The older I get, the more I am fascinated with these little lessons from nature that often illustrate God’s larger purposes for our spiritual nurture. One of my father’s favorite songs was the much beloved hymn “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing”. Robert Robinson might have been listening to the birdsongs in his garden when he wrote: “Tune my heart to sing Thy grace.”

Evidently, we all (not just the birds) need mentors and teachers to match our heart-songs to the melodies of our Heavenly Father. The heart of SLPC Women’s Ministry is similar. In the New Testament, the older women are encouraged to “teach the younger women” (Titus 2:4) how to love their husbands, families, and the work God has given them to do… in the home, church, and community. With the help of many godly lady-leaders in our congregation, training in Bible knowledge and practical graces occur naturally when women of all ages interact, study, and serve side-by-side.

Here are a few photo highlights of our women tuning in and teaching each other to serve their families and the Lord Jesus Christ:

In December 2022, four of our more “seasoned” seniors graciously hosted a lovely Christmas Tea for the Young Mom’s Wednesday Bible Study.

The beautiful table settings and conversation prompted interest from the younger women to learn some of Carol Fenley’s clever napkin folding techniques. “Setting the Table and Setting Limits” on our time and resources became the discussion topic for our January, Women 2 Women.

This February, 25 of our SLPC women gathered with 700 other regional women at Calvary Chapel of Delco to hear Lysa TerKeurst speak on her newest book: Good Boundaries and Goodbyes. We learned a great deal about God’s intent for strong, safe, and spiritually healthy relationships.

Coming Up This Spring

  • March 27th ~ Women2Women will be hosted at the church to discuss “Everyday Tools and Timeless Truths”: The practical and spiritual tools that help us with day-to-day tasks and “go-to” godly wisdom that keeps us grounded. Bring an every day tool that has been helpful to you.
  • April 19th ~ Jean Ruggeri will host another evening to “Welcome New Women.” This is a casual evening to get acquainted with newcomers and visitors who want to know more about SLPC.
  • May 31st ~ Lastly, our BIG SPRING EVENT will be the 2nd Annual Senior Women’s Luncheon on Wednesday, May 31st at SLPC. Besides a beautifully prepared salad lunch, our musical program will be performed by David Kim, first violinist and concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Reservations are required, $25 per person. Tickets will go on sale beginning April 2nd.

In the meantime, listen to this lovely old hymn, and ask the Father to tune your heart to sing HIS grace.

With love and blessing,
