Summertime Joy
By Kathryn Burling

Some of you may remember the Nat King Cole’s song, “Those Lazy, Hazy, Crazy Days of Summer.”  We all have memories of those kinds of summer days.  The song goes on to say, “Dust off the sun and moon and sing a song of cheer.”

My favorite, moonlit, summer memory when I was a wee child was the fireworks display in my own backyard.  Let me tell you … all the kids in the neighborhood would find their way to 207 32nd Street, Paxtang, Pennsylvania.  I mean, my Dad had fireworks back in the 1950’s/60’s that were “out of this world”— “sky high” – “right to the moon”!  No … Really!! What a song of cheer arose from that little group of kids on those 4th of July evenings!  Of course, that was my child’s eye view.  Isn’t that the case of summer – best seen from a child’s eyes? Belief, trust and joy at every turn?  “Oh … wait … that’s our life in You Lord --- belief, trust and joy at every turn.”

Psalm 16:5-11
The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup; You hold my lot.  The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.  I bless the LORD who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me.  I have set the LORD always before me; because He is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.  Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure.  For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let Your holy one see corruption.  You make known to me the path of life; in Your presence there is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

“Now that summer’s begun and there seems to be more time to rest – let’s rest in You, O LORD!  Let’s look to the quilt squares of Common Threads to find words of belief, trust and joy in You, O LORD.”
