Origins of Common Threads: SLPC Quarterly Newsletter
By Kathryn Burling

Welcome to the premiere issue of Common Threads. Our mission is to encourage, to bring hope, to unite our church body by weaving a common thread through our faith community in Christ—with our stories, prayers and praises.

Let’s begin with a brief history of how the concept of a quarterly newsletter began. The idea of a church newsletter was introduced last winter by Bob McKeaney at a Deacon’s meeting. He suggested it as a way to connect our congregation when we were feeling disconnected and isolated because of the pandemic. As a new deacon, I had been in a quandary as to how I could best serve. I longed to serve in a meaningful way, in an area in which I had skill. My background as a teacher of English Learners might be beneficial. Bob actually mentioned he needed help with a few ideas he had. As he put the first two before us, I shot up a quick prayer, “Lord, I am willing.”  Thankfully in both cases, others quickly volunteered. I held my breath as Bob began describing his last request, a desire to start a newsletter. This time, I shot my hand up, as my prayer was, “thank you Lord, an editor!” I have edited hundreds of essays and other writings of my students and other students who requested my help. Bob turned to me and said, “You’ve got the job!”

Welcome to Common Threads, the premiere issue. The heart of a body of believers holds together, perhaps, like a patchwork quilt.
